The Great Wall Restaurant Manchester - our review

Trusted Reviewer "Entertaining European guests, we wanted to prove how cheap eating out in Manchester can be, especially with the pound being so weak against the Euro. So, we headed down to Chinatown for a Business Lunch and took up The Great Wall's offer of 2 courses for £4.50 (or €4.50 to our guests). You couldn't eat in McDonalds at that price! The restaurant was very busy although there only seemed to be one or two waiters, neither of which were very welcoming. We ordered drinks, also at a ridiculous low price, and these were delivered with such aggression, the waiter could have broken both the bottle and the table. He wasn't very forthcoming with smiles despite our attempts to kick start a bit of banter. The food didn't provide many extra smiles either. Basic fare, served very quickly, that was certainly worth the price but, with so much competition around Chinatown, wouldn't win many repeat visits. Chinatown, like Rusholme's Curry Mile, is very hit and miss and it's important to know in advance which restaurants offer quality cuisine and which ones are little more than glorified takeaways. Unfortunately, on this lunchtime visit, Great Wall only impressed on price alone." - restaurants of manchester 21/2/09 (visited on a wednesday lunch)

The Great Wall Chinese Restaurant - member's reviews
"The Great Wall is one of Manchester's hidden gems. Going downstairs to the restaurant, I thought it would be a bit dingy, but it has a light and friendly feel. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. The food isn't presented like art but it's the best tasting Chinese food around. The place is popular with Chinese, which is always a good sign and you can imagine that it is a good example of authentic 'home cooked' Chinese food, basic and tasty" - Lucy Tyrer, Bolton - Member since Feb 2010 (5/2/11 visited on a wednesday lunch)

Trusted Reviewer "I visited Sweet Mandarin on a lunch time, and opted for the £5.50 lunch time deal. Although everything was fairly pleasant and £5.50 hardly breaks the bank, when considering there are some decent Chinese buffets in the city for around the same price, with a lot more choice, I probably wouldn't opt for this again. The starters were simple and pleasant. For main we ordered a dish each and shared. The 'Famous Chicken Curry' left a lot to be desired, it was quite bland and small, but the Sticky Schezuan beef was absolutely delicious. If you work near to the restaurant and are after a simple, quick lunch, then it may be worth a visit, but I probably wouldn't go again." - claudia, manchester - TRUSTED REVIEWER (8/4/09 visited on a thursday lunch)
