‘Proposal Training’ For Staff

The Lowry Hotel Manchester has rolled out ‘proposal training’ for its staff ahead of the peak Valentine’s Dayproposal season. The five-star hotel hosts around 300 proposals, weddings and anniversaries every year, making it one of the most romantic hotels in Manchester and, a hotspot for those popping the question in its luxury surroundings.

Food and Beverage Manager, Daniel Thompson, has been delivering bespoke training for the hotel’s staff, which included guidance from a professional photographer on how to capture the moment for loved-up couples using a mobile phone. Staff were provided with a masterclass on how to use lighting and angles to guarantee guests’ special moments are captured in full and advice on how to help choreograph the nerve-wracking question popping.

The training also highlighted which tables in the bar and the restaurant are most suited to engagements due to their privacy and romantic lighting. The team were also coached on how to calm any pre-proposal nerves by offering their discretion, advice and encouragement to guests.

Daniel comments: “Our staff are used to helping with hundreds of engagements every year and as Valentine’s Day is always particularly busy, we wanted to offer our staff some special training so they feel confident in assisting guests. There’s only one chance to capture the surprise and it’s important guests feel our staff are ready to help them make the most of this moment. Whether it’s capturing the whole thing on camera, picking out their ideal table or offering advice on where to hide the ring or when during the meal to pop the question, The Lowry Hotel is here to help.”

In addition, the five-star hotel is offering a number of luxury packages for Valentine’s Day including breakfast, dinner and spa proposals plus overnight packages.

The Valentine’s menu is available between 14th and 16th February for £55 per person. The luxury dining experience includes a glass of Champagne, a choice of starters, a Prosecco sorbet, mains including lamb wellington and pan-fried red mullet, and a delicious dessert. Enjoy a live pianist and singer on the 14th and a contemporary guitarist on the 15th for the perfect romantic evening. [click here for more information]

KAI

Turkish restaurant KAI situated on the site of former restaurant Prezzo on Deansgate which opened on Boxing Day is already employing 25 people.

The restaurant will be authentically Turkish with a contemporary twist, presenting meats fresh from the grill, salads and freshly made pitta breads all served mezze style so perfect for friends or groups to dine together.  The drinks menu will have some cocktails made with traditional Turkish spirits.

The restaurant has been given a stunning refurbishment that includes a beautiful flowered ceiling, vases of opulently gorgeous red roses and plush leather seating; all representing a modern Turkish design, which will make for an inspiring dining experience.

From the end of January KAI will also start serving traditional Turkish breakfasts that are also served in the authentic mezze (sharing) style, including Turkish eggs, 3 different types of olives, 4 kinds of cheese, Turkish honey & butter, tahini, pastirma (similar to pastrami), menemen, Turkish coffee & tea.

Restaurant owner Tayub Amjad, who also co-owns Manchester favourite Zouk Tea Bar, said: “We’ve always been passionate about Middle Eastern food, especially Turkish cuisine, and we feel there’s a gap in the market for an open kitchen restaurant of this kind.  We will have a chef’s table so customers can get up close to the atmosphere in the kitchen.”

Peaky Blinders Open

After a warm welcome from Tommy Shelby and his gang, Peaky Blinders Bar and Restaurant is now open!

After a stunning renovation, the old Sakana site on Peter Street, has been completely transformed into a grand, 1920s, speak-easy style drinking hall complete with a huge bar, plush leather booths, beautiful wall murals depicting characters from the show, art deco light fittings and a big balcony live music stage overlooking the whole venue.

The bar, restaurant and live music venue is, of course, inspired by the Peaky Blinders TV series and the whole era from which the show takes its name - ‘Peaky Blinders’ were in fact a real urban youth gang active in Birmingham around the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Peaky Blinders Manchester incorporates plenty of key elements from the show including character stills, and décor – fans can expect to feel like they’re immersed in the Peaky Blinders experience – above all though; Peaky Blinders sets out to be a warm, welcoming, enjoyable place to be.

The venue is carefully designed and inspired by the whole period. Fuss free and atmospheric –guests will be greeted by hosts in Peaky Blinders period uniform, who will ensure that they feel part of the experience from the off. Beer will be served in tankards and gorgeous, expertly created cocktails inspired by the show will be served in vintage glassware, alongside contemporary favourites too.

Food comes courtesy of Ocean Treasure owner Simon Yip (part of the established Chi Yip supermarket and wholesale group). Ocean Treasure, who were operating in the Sakana building before the transformation, have partnered with the new owners and are serving their acclaimed Chinese cuisine upstairs in the restaurant as usual. Simon and his renowned team have curated a beautiful menu of small plate Dim Sum for customers who wish to dine downstairs in the bar.

A new city centre hideaway is here - by order of the Peaky Blinders!

Free Babs This Friday

This Friday, newly opened BAB in the Northern Quarter will be giving away free kebabs to the first 100 people to get to the restaurant after 5pm. The brand new kebab concept opened in the Northern Quarter this week, driven by the team behind brunch favourite The Pen & Pencil.

Kebabs on offer for the public to try will include the Lamb Adana with with feta labneh, radicchio and pomegranate; Chicken with aleppo chilli, hummus, and peppers; Pork Souvlaki with pickles onions, tzatziki and pork scratchings or Hanger Steak with cauliflower, cumin and chilli. Vegetarian options will include Halloumi with carrot and currants; or Falafel with tomato, harissa and pistachio. Kebabs will be served with homemade flatbread and pickled chilli.

The first 100 people to get to the new restaurant after 5pm this Friday 7th December will be treated to a BAB completely free of charge. Diners will be asked to eat-in the relaxed space for the full BAB experience, with drinks available at an additional cost.

BAB is a quality, grown-up kebab concept, serving the grilled meat favourite in an all day long, 60 cover restaurant with an open chargrill kitchen. The ground floor venue just off Stevenson Square opened to the public this week for comfortable, casual dining 7 days a week, from 12-10pm. The venue is aiming to be the new go-to for both NQ locals and out-of-towners for good, fresh easy-going food all day long.

Hip Hop Home

Funky food  truck The Hip Hop Chip Shop is setting up a firm home via a proper restaurant in Ancoats, a bit like everybody else at the moment in fairness.  The venue will host around 40 covers, and comes on the back of a very successful time operating out of a rather splendid looking food truck.  It's definitely something different to the area, and we can personally vouch for them banging out some rather fine fish and chips.

Kala

The pending opening of Kala; the Gary Usher driven city centre bistro has been given a few more bits of meat on the pre-launch bone.  Launch has tentatively been given the open ended date of 'February'.  More excitingly, the kitchen will be headed up by the well regarded and an all-round good guy Jiji Zhelyazkov, formerly of Two Michelin star big hitters Moor Hall and Raby Hunt, in addition to a stint at Heston's iconic Fat Duck, so a very good pedigree indeed.  This is definitely one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks as things develop..

Randy Burgers Gone Flat

Controversial burger joint Randys NQ has closed its doors after a short stint in the city.  They hit the headlines due to having a burger named the 'Weinstein' on the menu, which was greeted with distain from much of the local food media.  Added to that never really found a niche or hit the ground jogging at all.  So; da da da, another one bites the dust.

Byrne Ventures

As we reported on Nov 2nd, it has now been confirmed that strong industry rumours following the closure of Manchester House are indeed true; Chef Aiden Byrne is launching his own restaurant in the ex Manchester House unit.  It is believed that the Manchester House name will be retained, along with the vast majority of décor, with a number of former staff reclaiming their roles.  The business will be financially backed by an as of yet unknown party/s, who has previous experience in hospitality, with a relaunch planned for December.

Aiden stated "I'm hoping Manchester House will once again confirm itself as a staple on the Manchester dining scene, exactly where it belongs. I feel like this is the perfect time and place for me to continue my craft. I'm extremely excited by the opportunity."

This is great news for the city, after what's been a tough period in terms of closures and lost talent.  We will report more news as it becomes available.

Asha's Acquisition

Our very own top rated Manchester Indian restaurant Asha's has joined the KRO Hospitality group.  Located on the flourishing Peter Street, Asha's has been spearheading authentic, high-end Indian cuisine in Manchester since 2015, and is housed in one of Manchester's finest Victorian palazzo buildings.  Since launch, Asha's has become a massive favourite amongst Manchester diners, and has been recognised in the Michelin Guide for offering high standards.

The latest acquisition by KRO Hospitality follows on from them purchasing the freehold of the building which Asha's is located in last Summer, with plans to convert the upper floors of the property into a 49 bedroom boutique hotel.

Owner of KRO Hospitality, Kim Eivind Krohn, said 'We're thrilled to welcome Asha's in to our expanding portfolio in Manchester.  Asha's is a much loved brand in Manchester, adored by food fans and celebrities alike.  We're progressing well with our exciting plans for 47 Peter St, and I believe the combination of a stunning new hotel and the culinary excellent and attention to detail of Asha's together in one building will be a fantastic draw.'  General Manager Helena Doskocz will continue to manage the day to day operation of the restaurant, alongside Executive Chef Ashwani Rangta heading up the kitchen. Grill Exits The Alley

Following on from yesterday's rumours, we can now confirm that one of Manchester's pioneering steak houses; Grill On the Alley, will be closing its doors as part of a series of branch cuts across the brand, following on from Living Ventures; the brand's parent company, closing other brands in their portfolio only  a matter of weeks ago.

This comes in tandem with a newly released report from Harden's, citing that closures in London have hit their highest rate in almost 30 years.  We are not alone at least.

Salvi's Pizzeria

Manchester Italian favourite Salvi's are to launch another new venue in the city centre, on John Dalton St in the former Salvi's Rosticceria unit.  Salvi's Pizzeria will serve authentic Naples style pizza once it launches in the coming weeks, which comes as a surprise considering how much genuinely good Neopolitan pizza we already have in the city, including that at Salvi's own Cucina venue, only a few doors down.

Ping Pan-Asian

MasterChef champion Ping Coombes has launched a deli in the Trafford Centre Selfridges' Food Hall.  Ping's first ever solo project will feature unique Pan-Asian flavours, and will be open for lunch and dinner, serving delights such as Malaysian Chicken Curry, Korean Hot Wings, Thai Fish Cakes, and Vietnamese King Prawn Rolls.  Alongside these, there will be a Dim Sum offering, plus the highly fashionable Bubble Tea.

Change At The Top

Chef Aiden Byrne has parted ways with D&D London, and his position of Northern Chef Director, leading to his role at 20 Stories also coming to an end.  A reason or this hasn’t been cited, although 20 Stories have reported earnings as being beyond expectations, an stated Aiden's input as being a key factor in this early success. Rumours are now circulating that he may be looking to acquire the former Manchester House unit for his own venture.

M.A.Dness

Last night we held back on naming the group, as there had been no official word at that time. We are still unsure as to what will happen to individual units - likewise, it wouldn't have been fair to members of staff learning of their job loss through press speculation, if they hadn't been contacted already.

However, from what we understand, based on a comment from Director of the M.A.D group Jonathan Hawkins, all units of the M.A.D. group - a Manchester institution - have entered into liquidation. That's Hula, Walrus, Tusk, The Fitzgerald, Rosylee, The Blue Pig (all Northern Quarter), Hula West Didsbury, and Heaton Moor's Tusk, Fitzgerald and Hula, as well as their printing company, which is a key part of Manchester bar life. Their Printworks super club, Lazy Lizard, closed down recently after only a few months along Infamous Dinner, which was previously part of the M.A.D portfolio before its sale last year.

They will be sadly missed and sees over 125 people seeking new employment hopefully their staff can find alternative jobs as we cross our fingers for the units being acquired before long in what is a very dark time in Manchester city centre.

NQ Closures?

We are hearing unfortunate rumours from a reliable source that a large bar & restaurant operator, mainly based in the Northern Quarter, has today gone into liquidation. If confirmed, a large number of jobs would be at stake, along with a massive part of the Northern Quarter’s bar scene taking a huge hit.  We will report more as things unfold!

The Ivy Collection Comes To Manchester

The Ivy Spinningfields will open in Manchester this winter, offering Mancunians a totally new dining experience set across four fabulous floors in the city’s financial district. The restaurant will feature a ground floor brasserie, first floor private dining room, an opulent Asian bar and restaurant on the second floor and a sumptuous Roof Garden featuring fire pits and lush foliage on the top floor. The Ivy Spinningfields will occupy an impressive, timber framed space within a new development, The Pavilion, surrounded by greenery yet located in the heart of the city.

Situated on the ground floor will be a traditional Ivy brasserie, open all day, seven days a week, serving modern British classics to suit all occasions. All-encompassing menus will feature a variety of dishes including truffled orzo pasta, lobster linguine and slow-cooked lamb shoulder.

On the first floor, The Dalton Room will be available for those seeking a more exclusive experience, accommodating parties of up to twenty seated guests.

The second floor of The Ivy Spinningfields will be the first ever “The Ivy Asian” – a glamourous bar and restaurant, serving Asian-inspired cocktails alongside dishes such as Wagyu beef with truffle sauce, salmon fillet teriyaki, and avocado, crispy tofu, lime and ginger dressing.

On the top floor will be Manchester’s first Roof Garden. With a fully retractable roof, the spectacular space will be open all year round. Guests will enjoy food and cocktails alongside an abundance of planting, greenery and foliage, roaring fire pits and colourful fabrics, all creating an enchanting oasis in the heart of Manchester.

Once open, the restaurant will host an exciting mix of yet to be announced guest DJs, events and entertainment on each of its four floors. Reservations can be made for all floors, whilst walk-ins will be welcomed for those wishing to experience either the Ivy brasserie, “The Ivy Asian” or Roof Garden.

Rabbit Down The Hole

‘Space age Asian fusion’ restaurant The Rabbit, formerly known as The Rabbit In The Moon, has announced it will close its doors on the 17th November after never really finding its feet, despite a couple of reinventions. Our own visits usually proved its food offering to be challenging, and never really seemed to suit the Manchester market’s tastes. Still, it’s another undoubted blow for the city’s food credentials, only weeks after the closure of Manchester House!

West Ireland

West Corner in the NQ has undergone a transformation to become The Corner Boy; which as far as our memory serves, is the first Irish bar in the NQ.  Selling Irish tipples and also traditional Gaelic food, The Corner Boy is open now!

Dishing Up In Dec

Dishoom Manchester will open on Thursday 6th December, in the historic former Freemasons’ Hall on Bridge Street.

The newest Dishoom will take up residence on the ground floor of Manchester Hall, a 1920s Grade II listed building, originally used as a Freemasons’ Hall. The space is – as ever – a loving homage to the old Irani cafés of Bombay and will accommodate 231 covers between the two dining rooms and the Permit Room cocktail bar.

The dining rooms will be open every day from early until late serving Executive Chef Naved Nasir’s first-class menus of Bombay comfort food. Including the Chef’s Special a decadent Nalli Nihari Biryani.

Nihari – a famously hearty and robust dish – is synonymous with celebration. Made into a biryani, it is doubly so. This indulgent special sees tender shank of lamb layered with rice and caramelised onions then sealed beneath a pastry blanket. It is then enriched further with kaleji (chicken liver), raita and nihari gravy on the side.

As with all Dishoom restaurants, for every meal served at Dishoom Manchester, the team will donate a school meal to a child who would otherwise go hungry. A meal for a meal. Dishoom work with two fantastic charities – the Akshaya Patra Foundation in India and Magic Breakfast in the UK – who provide nourishing meals to children in schools. So far, Dishoom has donated over 5 million meals (… and counting!)

Fans of Dishoom are invited to help them prepare for the opening by attending their soft launch. Guests will receive 50% off food at breakfast, lunch and dinner during soft launch, which will run from 9am on Sunday 25th November – 4pm on Wednesday 5th December. Walk-ins only.

Manchester Meet Mamucium

Ahead of the launch of Mamucium, the restaurant in the soon to open Hotel Indigo® Manchester - Victoria Station based next to Victoria Station, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Chef Andrew Green, the driving force behind one of Manchester's most hotly anticipated launches.

Whilst probably not a household name amidst Manchester's ever-growing portfolio of well-known Chefs, Andrew Green is one of the Manchester hospitality industry's best regarded kitchen leaders, holding Head Chef positions in places including the Radisson, Crowne Plaza, and more recently, the 5 star Lowry Hotel, having previously worked in hospitality for Manchester United, a position which Andrew admits that if he had the time, he'd once again do free of charge, such is his love for the club.

So, we spent a very enjoyable hour with Andrew, and amongst football related chat, here's what he had to say - [click here to read the full article]

Kala Kountdown

Gary Usher's anticipated 6th launch Kala has been given a launch time of February 2019, located on King St as previously reported, and will deliver the high quality, great value, accessible yet high end bistro food which Gary is rightly now famous for.  Usher is also set to feature in an upcoming Channel 4 documentary, focusing on the launch of his other new venture; Pinion just outside Liverpool.  Exciting times for an exciting Chef.

Patisserie Valerie

The board of Patisserie Holdings, the parent company of sweet tooth chain favourite Patisserie Valerie,  has announced that the group is subject to a winding up partition over a £1.1m unpaid tax bill.

33 Oldham Street Opening late October

We've just been made aware of a pending new launch in the NQ, at the end of October.  33 Oldham Street will driven by Andy Smith, one of the founders of the award-winning Kendal Calling, Off the Record and Bluedot festivals, alongside partner Jason McGuire of Manchester Coffee.

Layout wise, 33 Oldham Street's ground floor is accessible by imposing double doors, leading to a coffee shop in the day time, which transitions to a slick cocktail space of an evening.  Upstairs on the 1st floor, there will be a theme inspired by Japan’s famed Omakase joints, paying homage to the intimate jazz cafés and vinyl bars found in Tokyo since the 1950s. The stylish but comfortable lounge will be a workspace by day, and chic bar by night. The second floor features a newly restored arch window overlooking Oldham Street, and is home to a comfortable, stylish creative space and lounge, echoing that of a members club, without the membership fee.  And finally, the fourth floor, opening in 2019, will be the largest roof terrace in the Northern Quarter, and looks set to be 'a sun trap all year round', when the sun makes an appearance that is.  Providing a club vibe, table service across all floors will be available via the use of a downloadable phone app, enabling customers to both order and pay for food and drink service at their tables.

Manchester House Restaurant Manchester

Manchester House & Artisan Enter Administration

It saddens us to report that Manchester House and Artisan have both gone into administration and ceased trading as of yesterday afternoon, leaving around 130 people out of work, although it is thought that Living Ventures will do all possible to find people alternative employment elsewhere in the group's portfolio of restaurants, with some staff already relocating to other businesses in the city.  Living Ventures’ CEO Jeremy Roberts cited a tough Summer of trading, compounded by rising costs and high rent, as main drivers for the closures.

Manchester House was launched by Chef Aiden Byrne in early 2013, and consistently delivered some of the best dining experiences anywhere in the city, as well as hosting a rather nice sky bar, and was once mentioned as a potential Michelin Star contender.  Recently, the Head Chef role was taken over by Nate Tofan, who retained the same high standards of cooking.  The closure is without question a massive blow for the city’s food portfolio and reputation.

Allot To Be Excited About

Former Stockport based Vegan hotspot The Allotment, driven by talented Chef Matthew Nutter, is opening in the former Buca Di Pizza unit just off Albert Square, on Lloyd St.  The Allotment serves genuinely top end vegan dishes, a far cry from much of the samey, processed nonsense which plagues many vegan menus, so this is a welcome addition to the city centre.  The unit will house around 50 covers, and launch happens on November 3rd.

Staff Tips

Under new Government proposals, restaurants will be banned from not distributing 100% of staff tips amongst staff.  Earlier this year, a bit of a storm emerged when national and local restaurants had been seen to remove tips via staff wage packets, as well as higher end restaurants keeping service charge for themselves, so it's a bit of a hot topic which is sure to fire debate.

Peter Street Kitchen

Peter Street Kitchen Launches on the 13th October

It’s already blazed a trail through the capital’s dining scene. Now as Edwardian Hotels London announces the 13th October opening of Peter Street Kitchen, Manchester is all set to get its first taste of a dynamic new concept that skilfully embraces the art of shared dining.

Part of a multi-million-pound investment, this vibrant new space will spearhead the F&B offering at the revitalised Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel, one of only two five star hotels in central Manchester. Guests here will be able to choose from an array of small plates from two different cuisines, in this instance contemporary Japanese and Mexican, within a sophisticated yet unassuming setting.

Whether large groups or those wanting an intimate dinner for two, all will be seduced by an array of exquisitely prepared small plates at Peter Street Kitchen, showcasing flavours and ingredients of contemporary Japanese and Mexican cuisines. The venue will also offer semi-private dining and events, allowing guests to enjoy some privacy, whilst absorbing the ambience of the Kitchen. With communal bench tables and our pièce de résistance, the 12-seater Hibachi table, they can cater for a party of up to 28 guests.

From Mexico come such colourful and piquant offerings as Shredded crab with spicy ginger mayo tostadas; Robata mescal-glazed smoked paprika ribs and Mayan-spiced marinated chicken ensalada with cashews, black lime & sesame oil. Meanwhile, clean and sophisticated Japanese flavours take centre stage in dishes that include Yellowtail sashimi with spicy yuzu soy; Chilli and lemon roasted baby chicken served on a Peter Street Kitchen Bincho Grill; Warm Wagyu beef Japanese flatbread with dried chilli & yuzu mayo and King crab tempura with ama ponzu.

Desserts also draw on the fragrant flavours of Japan including the moreish Chocolate bento box with genmaicha ice cream and Kuro goma cheesecake with hassaku orange sorbet.

Complementing the restaurant offering is the equally stylish Rikyū Bar, which offers an extensive range of the finest wines, sake and signature cocktails against the backdrop of cool and contemporary interiors. Guests can alternatively experience Peter Street Kitchen’s Rikyū Lounge, located in the building’s original iconic brick colonnade, a sophisticated yet contemporary space holding up to 37 diners or 40 - 50 guests for semi-private drinks reception. Here guests can enjoy unusual beverages such as yuzu flavoured sake alongside a world class cocktail collection curated by Dan Berger (The Ned, The Blind Pig, Social Eating House), winner of Bombay Sapphire UK’s Most Imaginative Bartender 2015 award. In addition, from Saturday 13th October, the restaurant will throw a series of regular Rikyū Brunches featuring free-flowing Japanese-inspired cocktails, signature dishes and live entertainment.

Peter Street Kitchen has been overseen by Edwardian Hotels London’s Service Excellence Director Amir Jati, who established global private dining during his tenyear tenure at the Robert De Niro co-owned Nobu before going on to mastermind the hugely successful openings of the May Fair, Leicester Square and Monmouth Kitchens. Said Amir, “This concept has proved enormously popular in London, with Leicester Square Kitchen in the top five of both Peruvian and Mexican restaurants. We know that Peter Street Kitchen will be a similar game-changer within Manchester’s booming restaurant scene.”

The opening of Peter Street Kitchen is being supported by a PR campaign that features an outstanding piece of filmmaking premiered across various digital platforms. Showcasing the journey of a Geisha from Japan to Manchester, with music performed by the city’s Hallé Orchestra, the film provides the cultural cues of Japan which are brought to life within Peter Street Kitchen’s offerings.

To celebrate the launch of Peter Street Kitchen, guests will receive 50% off their contemporary Japanese and Mexican small plates during their soft launch, available from 13th - 17th October 2018. Peter Street Kitchen will also offer the pinnacle of service, with staff having gone through an intensive seven-week training period, including an immersion into Japanese food and drink, culture and etiquette.

Welcome to their kitchen. [more info]

Adam Reid At The French

Adam Reid at The French awarded 4 AA Rosettes

Chef Patron, Adam Reid, has firmly secured The French’s place as one of the finest dining establishment in the UK and the number one in Manchester by receiving a prestigious 4 AA Rosettes this week.

The intimate restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Grade ll listed building The Midland Hotel. Adam combines the classic features of the establishment with up-to date ideas, including the focal point of the room, a chef’s counter, bringing the kitchen to you.

Earlier this year the restaurant placed 13th in The Good Food Guide, the only establishment in Manchester to come in the Top 50 with a cooking score of 8 for their inventive tasting menu.

The criteria for the 4 Rosettes personifies Adam and his team ‘not only should all technical skills be exemplary, but there should also be daring ideas, and they must work. There is no room for disappointment. Flavours should be accurate and vibrant.’

Adam said on receiving the award, “To be awarded a fourth rosette after just 18 months since opening is amazing, it is all down to the hard work and dedication of the team in both the kitchen and service. Creating our own identity and personality has been our main aim and to see these accolades arriving on the back of that makes us very proud.” [more information]

Deansgate Developments

We can confirm that the former La Tasca unit on Deansgate will be converted into a night club titled Space, and also a cocktail bar named DGS.  La Tasca ceased trading several weeks ago, and lease of the property was hastily snapped up by In The Pink Ltd, who have ties with budget retailer Poundworld.  £1 entry and drinks promos perhaps?.

V&A Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea With Victoria And Albert

Manchester’s Marriott Victoria & Albert Hotel has launched an afternoon tea themed on the fascinating history of the hotel. Housed in a Grade II-listed building on the banks of the River Irwell, the hotel was originally constructed in 1844 as the Victoria & Albert warehouses to be used by The Mersey & Irwell Navigation Company.

The building, which has survived two World Wars, has been the home of the Victoria and Albert since 1989 and has recently undergone a £500,000 refurbishment to provide a new ‘welcome experience’ and reception area for guests.

The new afternoon tea menu mixes savoury and sweet flavours to create an afternoon tea suitable for royalty with a selection of traditional, vegetarian and vegan to cater to the needs of every guest. Traditional to contemporary flavours await with a range of delicious sandwiches served amidst an array of delicious desserts including mini macaroons and classic fruit scones complemented with clotted cream and jam. Klok Stops Ticking

Chef Ernest Van Zyl has sadly pulled the plug on his pending Kickstarter funded restaurant, named Klok, for which a site in Stockport had been secured via the old J. Winter's jewellery shop.  Only around £800 of the £30k target was raised, which along with 'legalities', led to the decision.  Chef Van Zyl is now believed to be considering a career change and walking away from the hospitality industry altogether.

Mana

Mana

Ahead of their pending launch in around a month's time, restaurant Mana has released some snippets of what we can expect once the doors are unshackled.  As previously announced, the kitchen's driving force will be Chef Simon Martin, formerly of Noma in Copenhagen; a restaurant which has previously been voted as the best on the planet on several occasions, and is without question one of the most influential kitchens in the industry.

Early Mana press release snippets and news certainly show signs of a strong Noma led influence, from the onsite R&D facilities, multi course yet express paced menu (16 courses in 1 hour 15 minutes), as well as an open plan serving kitchen which cost around £300k in itself, and is fully bespoke made by CHR, who commissioned the work on a non-profit basis.

Key to Mana's ethos is a resurgence of awareness in key British produce and ingredients, which sounds fantastic to us.  These shores, with the North West in particular, producing some of the finest produce that you'll discover anywhere on the planet, so celebrating that can only be a good thing.

Chef Martin has also divulged his strong belief in working hours which are conducive to life balance, along with good working conditions which in the modern kitchen are needed to nurture and retain quality staff.  As such, Mana will open 4 days a week, offering 4 dinner and 1 weekend lunch service, a move which is becoming more and more embraced by top end kitchens. Mana will launch in Ancoats on October 17th [book here]

Costa-Cola

American beverage giant Coca-Cola have purchased the Costa Coffee brand from Whitbread in a deal worth just under £4 billion.  The UK's now favourite coffee chain was purchased for a relatively small £19m in 1995, and at the time had just 39 outlets.  The company now has more than 2400 UK coffee shops, and another 1400 overseas.  The deal with Coca-Cola is certain to see Costa increase that overseas presence significantly, with Coca-Cola citing the main reason for their acquisition as being due to a lack of coffee product in their portfolio.

Five-Star Lowry Hotel Negotiates Deal With Manchester Tea Merchant

The five-star Lowry Hotel has announced an exclusive collaboration with Denton based tea supplier, Tea from The Manor, to add to the hotel’s extensive list of local suppliers.

The partnership which follows the announcement of a long-term collaboration with Salford based gin distillery FOUR SIS4ERS, is a testament to The Lowry Hotel’s aim to use only locally sourced ingredients.

James Green, founder of Tea from The Manor, past career in the military gave him the inspiration to set up the company after being based in Hong Kong with the Ghurkha army. The exclusion of alcohol in the Ghurkha army led James to sample a vast amount of teas, which contributed to a long-term passion for tea brewing.
After leaving the military James’ interest in tea stayed and several years later Tea from the Manor was born.

Tea from the Manor brings the finest full leaf teas from the best tea gardens around the world to delight the palates of its customers, which now includes ‘The Lowry’ blend tea.

The interesting history of the origin of the company sparked the interest of The Lowry Hotel’s General Manager Adrian Ellis, who after visiting the tea tasting room in Denton resulted in a flourishing collaboration between the two.

As well as Tea from the Manor introducing an exquisite range of teas into the River Bar and Restaurant to compliment the bespoke range of limited-edition afternoon teas, The Lowry Hotel and Tea from The Manor are in talks to open a tea emporium within the hotel, making it one of the first hotels in Manchester to do so. Radisson Blu Edwardian Manchester

Peter Street Kitchen Launches In October

It’s already blazed a trail through the capital’s dining scene. Now as Edwardian Hotels London announces the October launch of Peter Street Kitchen, Manchester is all set to get its first taste of a dynamic new concept that skilfully embraces the art of shared dining.

Part of a multi-million-pound investment, this vibrant new space will spearhead the F&B offering at the revitalised Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel, one of only two five-star hotels in central Manchester. Guests here will be able to choose from an array of small plates from two different cuisines, in this instance contemporary Japanese and Mexican, within a sophisticated yet unassuming setting.

Whether large groups or those wanting an intimate dinner for two, all will be seduced by an array of exquisitely prepared small plates. Showcasing flavours and ingredients from both nations, the venue will also cater for private dinners for which the staff will especially use the traditional hibachi, the iconic Japanese charcoal brazier.

Complementing the restaurant offering is the equally stylish Bar and Rikyu Lounge located in the building's stunning original brick colonnades. [more info]

Hasta La Tasca

The Deansgate branch of the at-one-time pioneering yet now beleaguered Spanish chain La Tasca, has closed down, leaving only 6 surviving branches in the whole country.  Owned by the same parent company (CDG) as Las Iguanas and Bella Italia, not to mention the more upmarket La Vina, all of whom also have a presence on Deansgate, the closure has gone broadly unmentioned, sadly.  But since it was the first ever branch of La Tasca to open back in 1993, based right here in Manchester, we felt it only proper to bid farewell.  Long before the massive influx of quality Spanish eateries in Manchester and beyond, La Tasca was likely many Brit's first experience of Spanish influenced food on these shores.

Don Giovanni & Cibo Go Above & Beyond to Accommodate Guests

Don Giovanni and its sister restaurant Cibo both classic Italian restaurants in city centre Manchester have launched Braille and audio versions of their menus in order to help and include customers who are visually and hearing impaired.

Both restaurant brands aim to promote the integration of all members of the community, particularly those who may often be overlooked due to their disabilities when dining out. They offer large print, Braille and audio menus for those customers who may need these and also are very welcoming and accepting of guide dogs.

The business have chosen to take this step making sure that all potential guests feel welcome and special, they believe that in a very saturated market during times of difficult trading, it’s this ‘extra mile’ service offered that help them to acquire and retain customers. Karin also reflects ‘It is extremely rewarding seeing everyone in the team get behind this initiative, and how this simple goal of complete inclusion brought the entire online community together,". Salford Watergardens

The Lowry shopping mall on Salford Quays is set to undergo a massive £25m renovation, which will see much of the centre's waterfront become a new dining destination.  The side/corner of the centre facing Old Trafford, near the Millennium Bridge, has been chosen for the work, and in the words of the operator, will transform The Lowry into 'a unique shopping and leisure destination that will draw people from across the region to Salford Quays and MediaCityUK'.

Randall and Aubin

In a surprising move, Bridge Street seafood and bubbles hotspot Randall and Aubin has taken advice from insolvency firm CFS Restructuring and has also put the business up for sale, after racking up a £670k loss in the first 12 months of trading.  A £1.5k per week rent, along with rising produce costs, are believed to be contributory factors.

Tea Time Is Trending At The Lowry Hotel

The Great British Bake Off effect and the next generation of Britons has resulted in a spark in popularity of the traditional afternoon tea, with the five-star Lowry Hotel seeing over 2,000 afternoon teas being sold each month.

The genteel tradition which is now popular for social get togethers, has resulted in The Lowry Hotel saying goodbye to their long lunch service and hello to a bespoke range of limited-edition afternoon teas, accompanied by the hotel’s very own ‘Lowry Blend’ tea.

Since opening in 2001, The Lowry Hotel’s traditional afternoon tea has been a firm favourite of guests and diners, with the demand being so high that The Lowry Hotel has made the strategic decision to replace the lunch menu and create an impeccable selection of afternoon teas, making them one of the first hotels in Manchester to progress from the lunch menu tradition.

The exclusive afternoon teas, which will have a change of theme every month, will be influenced by local events, produce and ingredients. The expansion of the hotel’s already delicious range of afternoon tea starts with a Pride-themed afternoon tea to celebrate Manchester Pride taking place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, with £1 from every afternoon tea sold being donated to the charity. Chef Beckham

We have it on good industry authority that Manchester United Legend David Beckham, is to launch is own cooking series in the US, via 15 minute 'slots' to be presented between full length shows, with a view to testing the water over a more permanent fixture.  Beckham is known to be a food lover who attended cookery school whilst playing for AC Milan, and he's one of Gordon Ramsay's best mates and neighbours in LA, so he's sure to get some good guidance on the cooking side of things a least.  Let's just hope that Becks doesn’t swap crossing with getting cross over an overcooked risotto.

Bee Involved With Manchester’s Most Ambitious Art Project

What could be more Manchester than creating a city-wide art project based around the Bee emblem? Symbolising the resilient spirit of the city’s people, the City Council and Wild in Art have created a public art trail of over 80 individually designed giant Bee sculptures and, naturally, Harvey Nichols had to get involved.

The Bee trail is created for and by Manchester. Regional artists have designed the sculptures and local communities have sponsored them – including Harvey Nichols. They decided to sponsor ‘Bee a Rainbow’ created by Rachel A Blackwell, who describes her Bee as “a symbol of hope perched upon a sky of dreams.”

You can download the Bee in the City app here, which has the full trail map for you to discover and unlock the sponsor rewards. Speaking of rewards, if you unlock Bee a Rainbow on the trail, you can enjoy a complimentary hot drink or children’s cocktail at the Second Floor Bar and Brasserie. [more info]

St-Germain Liqueur Takeover

Fancy a French-inspired tipple? Thought so...

To celebrate the arrival of summer (and to make it even better than it already is), St-Germain liqueur will be taking over Harvey Nichols.

If you’re not yet familiar with St-Germain, it’s a French liqueur made from Elderflower. Lovingly collected in a surprisingly short window of just a few weeks in spring, the Elderflower blossoms are harvested into a delicious liqueur that, trust us when we say, will ruin all other drinks for you. Looking for a new summer drink? Consider it found.

With that in mind, St-Germain has set up a number of exciting and suitably-summery events throughout the store. [more info]

Tattu Manchester

National Dim Sum Week comes to Manchester

Tattu is joining a host of restaurants across the country for the inaugural seven-day celebration of National Dim Sum Week (30th June – 6th July 2018).

Originating with the Cantonese in Guangzhou, the term ‘dim sum’ refers to a unique culinary art form of bite-sized sweet or savoury dishes prepared in a number of ways, most commonly steaming, baking or frying.

The literal translation of dim sum is ‘touch your heart’ and it is a dining tradition made for sharing. From the early morning Yum Cha meetings of the historic Silk Road travellers, to the modern-day restaurants that are frequented in cities around the world by work colleagues or for family get togethers.

To mark the first national celebration, Tattu has created a unique dim sum tasting platter designed for two to share, the platter features a selection of Tattu's signature dim sum. [more info]

The brothers have extensive experience within the Manchester and London hospitality scene, namely The Bubble Room, Gorilla and Polpo at Spuntino, pulling together their expertise, creating a concept that will sit proudly in the neighbourhood surroundings of Ancoats.

You’d be forgiven to think that this bar is inspired by a Charlotte Bronte novel, but you’d be wrong, The Jane Eyre is inspired and named after Jonny and Joe’s Mother. “We want to create a warm and friendly environment as that’s what she always gave us growing up.”

Ciaoluccios

Hot on the heels of Cau steakhouse announcing that it will be entering into a CVA, Italian chain Carluccios is also expected to make a similar announcement later this week, possibly as early as this afternoon.  It seems that Italians on the British high street have definitely fallen out of favour with diners.  35 branches are set for closure, but there's currently no news on which ones are set for closing, so we await the fate of the 3 Manchester based ventures.

The Tea Room Manchester

Afternoon Tea Room

This week see's the launch of The Tea Room at The Midland Hotel's new Evening Tea.   We were fortunate enough to get a sneak preview last week.

The luxuriously attired Tea Room is a treat for the senses in itself, housed arguably Manchester city centre's most decadent and certainly most historic and celebrated destination.  A twist on the traditional afternoon tea comes via a selection of sandwiches including Chicken, Mango and Coriander on Granary Bread, There's also Asparagus, Artichoke and Parmesan Mimosa on Brioche, along with hot savoury bites such as Ox Cheek with Blue Cheese Croquettes, and Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Sriracha Sauce.

Once you've had your fill of savouries, there' a selection of cakes, such as Elderflower an Gooseberry Cake, and the super indulgent Dark Chocolate and Salted Caramel Tart, garnished with Manchester bee adorned chocolate shards.  And any tea, whether it be afternoon or evening, wouldn’t be complete without the obligatory scones, which in this case came with various jam options, and a fantastic lemon curd, to either go underneath or on top of your clotted cream.

Food was paired a tea of your choice, and also two Gin and Tonics, featuring both Brockmans and also the locally produced Three Rivers gins. The Tea Room at The Midland's Evening tea is available Thursday to Sunday from 17:30 until 19:30, and is priced at a very reasonable £35 per head.
