"I visited Dough with my partner on Wednesday night, as I'd passed it a few nights before and wanted to give the place a go! We got a table without a reservation and were sat down quickly. The menu is varied and there were a few pizza combinations that I'd never even considered before! Drinks were offered and turned up in good time, Starters were OK, prawns in garlic a little bit flavourless, mushrooms good. The pizzas we ordered (Asian Chicken with cashews and Spicy Chicken) were flavoursome and unusual, if a little bit too dry for my taste. The bill was correct and pretty cheap considering it's in the Northern Quarter. We were not very pleased with the food though. We had a garlic bread to share for starter, and it was excellent: I hoped that the pizzas and salad were going to be just as good. Wrong. It was very bog standard. The Spicy Chicken pizza was nice, but just lots (LOTS) of sweet chili sauce sloshed all over a perfectly nice pizza. It just didn't taste right. Don't get me wrong, I love chili sauce but I won't bother again. The Veggie pizza was OK. But that's all it was... it was OK. We went for a drink round the corner at returned on time, when we were promptly shown to our table. We ordered some drinks and looked over the menu, ordering some bread and olives to start and a pizza each. The bread and olives came after about 10 minutes but the pizza took a further hour. I went to Dough in February (see review below) and it was the same story. The food was great, the staff are friendly and attentive but 1 hour and 15 minutes for 2 pizzas is just a little excessive. "Our meal was delicious, and the service excellent. The only thing I had any qualms with at Dough was the fact that the beers were 20p more on the bill than they had been stated on the menu. The 20p didn't make much of a difference but it was more the principle of it. We were told there was about a half hour wait for a table and were shown through to Apotheca (the bar owned by the same people next door). After about 45 minutes we asked at the bar to see if our table was ready. It had been for a while. We assumed that having been shown to the bar we would be told when the table would be available. This was not the case. When we did get to our table we were presented with the menus. It was a fair wait before the waiter returned to take our order and another wait to get our food. By this time the restaurant wasn't too busy. The food though was good. The gold standard for pizza in Manchester is Croma in terms of service, food and value for money. The pizzas at Dough are equally generously topped, well presented and excellent value for money. Have to say, they've done a good job. Italian cuisine but without an Italian presence. However, this does not detract from it in any way. Was also impressed that gluten-free options were available. As my co-diner loves pizza, but not wheat, this was very welcome. Other restaurants, take note. There will be an increasing demand for this and Dough have got it right from the outset. If you get a seat near the window, it's a very nice place to watch the world go by. Trusted Reviewer "The Northern Quarter has been crying out for a restaurant like Dough. The fact that it was eventually delivered by an independent Manchester restaurateur, ensuring the area isn't cashed in on by the chains, is also a reason to celebrate. Nestled in a beautiful building on the corner of High Street, opposite Walrus, Bluu, Odd and Socio Rehab, it couldn't be more in the heart of the Northern Quarter's vibrant nightlife.

Your first impression when you enter the red glass door into Dough is of how big the place is - 140 covers over 2 floors to be precise - and the atmosphere can be fantastic, with the chefs adding to the ambience in their theatre style kitchen. Kitted out in their Dough t-shirts they dress and prove the homemade pizza dough in front of the impressive stone based pizza oven. I guess it should be pointed out here, where the name Dough comes from. All the pizza bases, dough balls, dough sticks and garlic breads are made on site with a variety of doughs, which should appeal to those with special dietary requirements. There's gluten free, wholewheat and dairy free options as well as a fantastic selection of dishes for vegetarians.

We've tried a variety of dishes on our three visits so far, with the stand out selections being the Steak Gnocchi pasta (£6.95), Pizza Funghi (£5.85) and the Pizza Rustica (£6.50) - although you can't really go wrong with any of the dishes on the menu - especially at these prices! Pizzas start at £4.95 and the most expensive item on the menu is only £7.25 (Spicy Chicken Pizza). Compare that to other Pizzerias in town and you get the picture - Pizza Express costs 80p more for a Pizza Margherita, Piccolino £1.30 more, and The Olive Press a staggering £2 more! Only Croma is slightly cheaper (by 15p).

Whilst apologetic and friendly, the service was slow on our last visit, the busiest of the three. With the dough being made on the premises and a large busy restaurant to accomodate, you can possibly see the reason behind this. The fact we were in a rush to get to the football probably also had us clock watching more than normal. Another thing we loved however was the fact the bill stated that service charge was not included and that the staff get to keep whatever tip you leave. A nice touch that a few other places in town should follow suit with.

Dough is also extremely family friendly and deserves special mention for the 50p donation to charity for every child's pizza sold (starting at just £3.25). Kids are encouraged to create their own pizza and are given a colouring pack to keep them entertained. For those with babys, there's even a baby station where you can boil water and prepare food and bottles yourself.

All in all, extremely tasty pizzas at a fantastic price, coupled with some fantastic ideas with the customer in mind, add to the happiness directed towards this great addition to Manchester's dining scene. If you're starting a night out in the Northern Quarter, looking for a bite to eat whilst shopping across the road in the Arndale, in need of a pre-show meal before heading to the MEN Arena or sharing a family meal at the weekend, you can't go wrong with Dough!" - restaurants of manchester 4/12/08 (visited on a wednesday evening)
